What is Libel?

A libel is something that has been published that can be damaging to a person's reputation. A libel is linked with defamation, defamation of character, character assassination, misrepresentation, scandal-mongering, denigration, vilification, derogation, insult, slander, malicious gossip, lie, slur, smear, untruth, false insinuation, false report, smear campaign, slight, innuendo, rumour.  

In 2011 six British newspapers were sued for libel and invasion of privacy. Christopher Jefferies, after he was arrested by police investigation the murder of Joanna Yeates in Bristol. The newspapers that were sued are the sun, Daily Mirror, Daily Star, Daily Express, Daily Mail and Glasgow-based Daily Record.  

Elton John sued UK newspaper the times for allegedly defaming him by implicating he was involved in a tax avoidance scheme.  

Author of the Harry Potter book series JK Rowling sued the Daily Mail for libel over a story claiming the writer was a single mother living in Edinburgh.  

Many newspapers and journalist do get sued for libel, defamation, false insinuation ETC. Over the search for the best angle on a story for public interest, many claim there efforts and breaches of the PCC laws were for the public and that they deserved to know. Noble as it is law is law and Journalists and newspapers are and never will be above it.
